Management Project
NASA's Sun-Earth Day 2004-2006

During 2004 and 2005 I was the Project Lead and Website Content Manager for NASA's Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum's national Sun-Earth Day (SED) programs. The SED theme for 2004 was 'Venus Transit. The Theme for 2005 was 'Ancient Observatories: Timeless Knowledge'. Our theme for 2006 will be 'Eclipse: In a Different Light'.

Sun-Earth Day 2005:
Ancient Observatories, Timeless Knowledge

The Ancient Observatory theme for 2005 featured solar alignments with structures marking the equinoxes and/or solstices. In partnership with the Exploratorium, Ideum, and NASA Connect, NASA's Sun-Earth Connection Education Forum produced video and webcast programming that was shared with formal and informal education audiences nationally. The programs featured several sites including: Chaco Canyon (New Mexico), Hovenweep (Utah), and Chichen Itza (Mexico). Many of these sites present unique opportunities to develop authentic cultural connections to Native Americans, highlighting the importance of the Sun across the ages. We involved Sun-Earth Connection scientists, their missions, and research programs in order to share NASA solar research with diverse audiences.

Development Project
The Student Observation Network

Two years ago my colleagues and I were asked by the NASA Explorer Schools program to develop an on-line inquiry-based education template that could be adapted to fit a wide variety of science topics. Along with team members Elaine Lewis (Curriculum Expert), Don Robinson-Boonstra (S.O.N. Coordinator), and Bryan Stephenson (Web Designer) we accepted the challenge and created The Student Observation Network is now an integral part of the NASA Explorer Schools program. You will see a brief description on the home page of the S.O.N. site.

The Student Observation Network

Student Observation Network (SON) modules allow you to discover answers to some of the questions that excite NASA scientists. "How can we predict solar storms to protect satellites and astronauts?"; "How can falling snow, snowpacks, and ice cores help us decode climate and climate change?" "Where are we in the Universe?" "Are there places in our Solar System, other than Earth, that may harbor life?"

Each SON module shows you how to make your own observations and compare it with NASA data. Discover cutting edge science with NASA mission data that are easy to use. Each SON module provides tutorials to help you understand the scientific data and step-by-step guides to using the data. In addition, there is background information, including connections to NASA scientists, to help you understand these essential scientific questions.

Our Sun Our Earth CD-ROM

This CD contains a learning/teaching component called, "Making Sun-Earth Connections" This was my first NASA project and was designed to assist teachers and scientists when giving presentations on the Sun-Earth Connection. It component contains a presentation for four different grade levels. Each presentation includes video clips, colorful graphics, and audio narration to help students understand the dynamics of the Sun, of the aurora, and of the turbulent space around Earth.

Sun-Earth Day 2005: A Special Day In Your Classroom

This activity is an opportunity to explore observations of the Sun in the past and present. You will be introduced to a variety of images, ideas and the new NASA Connect program, "Ancient Observatories, Timeless Knowledge". This particular NASA Connect program is not just about math! It also includes Science, Geography, History, Cross-Cultural Connections and Technology. (Developed by Elaine Lewis and Troy Cline)

Computer Lab Project

The main goal of this project was to design a computer lab that could function as either a multimedia instructional lab or a cross-curriculum classroom. This particular "drop-in" plan is designed to accommodate 30 student workstations and 1 super/presentation station.
